Community is Key to Local Law Firm
Back in 2007 Christchurch based law firm Saunders Robinson merged with Rangiora based William Brown Law. Now as Saunders Robinson Brown they operate three offices, with their Rangiora base employing 13 permanent staff, the majority of whom are North Canterbury residents.
Recruiting was not an issue for the Rangiora office says General Manager Steve Fraser. “Most of our Rangiora staff live in North Canterbury and were tired of commuting. We are also very big on promoting work/life balance and flexible working arrangements”.
The legal work itself is varied says Rangiora based partner Chris Boivin, “We do commercial and property law, much of the work has a rural focus but if we need to draw on specialists from our Christchurch branch we can easily do so. It’s the best of both worlds really and certainly as interesting and challenging as working in the city”.
The Rangiora and city offices work closely together despite their geographic distance. The Rangiora office has fibre and up-to-the-minute videoconferencing equipment allowing them to easily draw on specialists from other branches and bring them into meetings virtually when necessary.
Whilst the infrastructure is the same as you would expect in the city, says Fraser, there is a greater sense of community. This is something the firm have been keen to support by getting involved in local events and initiatives.
The sense of community also flows into the way of doing business says Boivin, “We’re located so centrally in the area it makes it really easy to do face to face meetings. And it’s an old-fashioned way of marketing really too, walking up High Street and seeing people”.

“There are some awesome things going on here, there’s been quite a change post-quake with new businesses and returning businesses now popping up in town. And we are really enjoying the challenge of providing legal expertise to the district,” concludes Boivin.
